Young anglers will have the opportunity to fish, learn, and have fun at the Gulf State Park Kids Surf Fishing Clinic, scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon. This free event, open to children ages 6 to 15, will offer a hands-on introduction to surf fishing, with local experts providing tips and demonstrations throughout the morning.
Participants will be provided with free bait and a limited number of fishing poles, though organizers are seeking donations of additional rods and reels. Those interested in contributing can reach out to Jordan Gooding, the event organizer, at [email protected].
The clinic will take place along the scenic Gulf State Park beach, offering a relaxed environment where young anglers can learn the basics of surf fishing. Instructors will guide participants on techniques such as baiting hooks, casting lines, and identifying local fish species commonly found along Alabama’s coast.
David Thornton, a local shore fisherman and long-time supporter of the clinic, praised the event as a vital community initiative. “I think it is one of the finest things the fishing community does for less fortunate kids in our area, as well as young visitors, giving them a hands-on opportunity to learn the basics of surf fishing,” Thornton said. “With the help of local volunteers and sponsors, this program gives kids the chance to fish today—and builds a foundation for future clinics to reach even more young anglers.”
