Central Texans Embrace Water Sports as Summer Approaches

by Allen

With rising temperatures signaling the arrival of summer, residents across Central Texas are flocking to water and surf parks to cool off and enjoy outdoor activities.

Waco Surf, a local attraction, opened its surf park in March, followed by the launch of its water park in May. The parks have quickly become popular destinations for both locals and visitors.

“It might hit 100 degrees as early as May,” said Mike Schwaad, general manager of Waco Surf. “It looks like it’s going to be a spicy summer.”

Among the visitors is the Ortega family from Sayulita, Mexico, a town known for its surfing culture. Kala Ortega described the experience at Waco Surf as unique.

“It’s so different from any other wave I’ve ever surfed,” Ortega said.

Leah Carranza Iracleous, a relative of Ortega, added that despite the hot weather, their enthusiasm for the sport remains strong.

“It’s pretty hot out today,” Carranza Iracleous said. “I think it’s the hottest day we’ve had since we got to town. But being in the water helps cool you off, especially with the nice breeze. Every time you wipe out, you get submerged, which is refreshing.”

Waco Surf’s water park will remain open through September 7, while the surf park will operate through December, offering ample opportunity for residents and tourists to enjoy water activities throughout the summer and fall.
