The Rip Curl Nationals delivered thrilling competition and celebrated surfers of all ages over the weekend at Cox Bay, as participants from across Canada and beyond gathered from May 9 to 11 to contest top honours in multiple divisions.
The event drew enthusiastic crowds to Tofino’s iconic backdoor surf break, where hometown stars and emerging young surfers showcased their skills across age categories ranging from Under-14 to 40-plus.
Sixteen-year-old local standout Ocea Green captured the Under-16 Girls division title with a commanding performance, scoring 17 points in the final heat to outpace competitors including Camille Cortazzo, Teagan Sandvig, and Jade Rosene. Green went on to claim victory in the Under-18 Girls division and finished second in the Open Women’s final, underscoring her rising status in Canadian surfing.
“This event brings the whole community together,” Green said. “It’s a great platform for young surfers who don’t often get to compete internationally to show their abilities. The level is getting higher every year, and it motivates everyone — young and old — to keep improving.”
Green’s journey was especially notable given her recent recovery from a concussion sustained just two weeks prior to the competition. “I wasn’t sure I’d be able to compete, so I’m really happy to have made it through and surfed my best,” she added.
Growing up surfing in Tofino since age seven, Green’s passion intensified during the COVID-19 lockdown when she practiced daily. “Every day out there is different, and I love that challenge,” she said.
In the Open Women’s division, Mathea Demphle-Olin secured first place, commending the progression of West Coast surfing talent. “Each generation pushes the limits further,” she remarked. “Tofino is home for me — the waves are challenging, but you always find those special spots.”
On the men’s side, Tanner Sandvig from San Clemente, California, edged out local Samuel Weber to win the Under-16 Boys division with a narrow 13.63 to 13.37 final score. “The competition was tough, and I’m stoked to come out on top,” Sandvig said. “Tofino’s beauty and waves make the trip worthwhile every time.”
Shea Bruhwiler took the Under-18 Boys title, while Shannon Campbell Brown, head coach of Canada’s National Surfing Team, earned his first national title in the 40+ Men’s division. “Winning here means a lot — especially against such strong competition,” Brown said. “I’ve coached many of the young surfers competing, so it’s great to show them what’s possible.”
Brown described the event as a celebration of community and camaraderie. “It’s about catching up with friends, competing hard, then sharing a laugh and a beer on the beach. That spirit makes this event truly special.”
The Rip Curl Nationals continue to highlight the growth and talent within Canadian surfing, inspiring athletes from grassroots to elite levels while drawing fans to the vibrant surf culture of Tofino.
