Despite modest surf conditions on Saturday, more than 35 enthusiastic dogs showcased their surfing skills during the fourth annual Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza at Flagler Beach. The event, a celebration of man’s best friend and coastal culture, drew a lively crowd eager to cheer on the canine competitors.
The day began with a sunrise yoga session designed for both dogs and their owners, setting a relaxed tone for the event. Surfing competitions followed throughout the day, divided into small, medium, and large dog categories. Additional highlights included tandem surfing performances and a spirited costume contest, featuring creative entries such as Dixie, a Doberman pinscher dressed as a police officer escorting her Chihuahua “prisoner,” Rangler, a three-legged dog named Minus portraying a shark-bite victim, and Winnie, a Cavalier Spaniel who won the costume contest while riding in a flower-adorned wagon.
Among the competitors, Sharkin Sammie—2024 and 2025 Surf Champion for the Brevard County Easter Competition—impressed once again by securing second place in the tandem category and third in the medium dog division.
Event organizer Suzie Johnston praised the community’s involvement: “Everything went wonderful. The biggest takeaway was seeing how many people volunteered and how much support we received from the city. The event continues to grow every year.”
Johnston, former mayor of Flagler Beach, partnered with City Commissioner Eric Cooley to host the charitable event, which raises funds for local organizations including K9s for Warriors, SMART of Flagler, and the Flagler County Humane Society.
“Flagler is well known for its dog-friendly beach,” Johnston noted. “This event is a perfect way to celebrate our community and our four-legged friends.”
