Coco Ho: The Trailblazing Surfer Defining Signature Style

by Allen

Surfer and entrepreneur Coco Ho has continued to carve her unique path in the surfing world, marking the first anniversary of her signature surfboard brand, XO Coco. Over the past year, she has traveled extensively—from Micronesia’s Natural Selection event to Abu Dhabi’s new wave pool, and across Japan and California—showcasing her evolving collection of surfboards. Soon, she will join the Swatch Nines, a wild multi-sport event in Texas, further expanding her diverse presence.

Since stepping off the professional tour, Ho has remained busy and inspired. In a recent phone interview, she shared insights into her latest collaborations, including her partnership with lifestyle brand Slowtide, and how each project reflects her values and experiences.

Collaborations Rooted in Friendship and Respect

Ho’s collaboration with Slowtide began through longtime personal connections. “I actually grew up with Alana Spencer, and her husband Kyle is one of the co-founders,” Ho explained. “I’ve been a fan since day one. Starting your own brand isn’t easy—I’ve learned that firsthand. I really respect how they’ve built it. For me to be invited, 10 years later, to create a signature collection with them is a huge honor.”

Designing with Authenticity

Working alongside Maui native and designer Wylie Von Tempsky, Ho crafted a collection that balances tropical flair with subtlety. “I’m no graphic designer, but I had a clear vision: floral, but not cheesy; tropical yet true to the roots,” Ho said. “I also wanted the X’s and O’s to be hidden, not obvious. Wylie nailed it on the first version. That’s rare and exciting.”

Meaningful Projects and Practical Products

Ho views her various projects through the lens of practicality and personal relevance. “It’s a blessing to have this platform. Designing collections and having my own products is incredible, but everything must make sense. I travel a lot and can’t have anything useless in my bag,” she said. “With Slowtide, I love their lightweight towels for travel, the heavier ones for home, and the beach blankets for sunsets. The Turkish towels double as sarongs, so they’re very versatile.”

XO Coco and Beyond

Celebrating a year of XO Coco, Ho is preparing for the premiere of A Year of XO, a documentary highlighting her journey with a single quiver of boards. “I traveled with just four boards—the Tryst, Bliss, Aurora, and Halcyon. Those few models can handle any condition, and aside from my log, they’re always with me.”

Ho also revealed upcoming projects with Volcom and Raen eyewear. Her partnership with Raen stems from a personal health concern: “I have to get pterygium surgery, which develops from UV exposure common among surfers. So I chose the strongest lenses and designed frames big enough to protect anyone’s eyes. After what I’ve learned, I’m an advocate for normalizing sunglasses for kids.”

Looking Ahead

With a clear vision and grounded approach, Coco Ho continues to expand her influence beyond surfing, shaping products and partnerships that align with her lifestyle and values. Her ability to blend authenticity with innovation makes her a standout figure in the sport and business of surfing.
