Kelly Slater Mourns Surf Photographer Timo Jarvenin

The surfing world is in mourning following the death of acclaimed surf photographer Timo Jarvenin, who passed away last week after a battle with thyroid cancer. Known for his relentless dedication and unique talent behind the lens, Jarvenin was regarded as one of Europe’s finest surf photographers and a close friend of surfing legend Kelly Slater.

Jarvenin’s passion for photography began in an unlikely setting — as a young boy in Finland, far removed from the sun-soaked beaches and towering waves of the surfing world. After leaving school early to work in a repro house, he borrowed his father’s Nikon F camera and began photographing his snowboarder friends. His very first roll of film earned him a double-page spread in a snowboarding magazine, signaling the start of a remarkable career.

Over the years, Jarvenin earned a reputation as the “Nikon guy,” known for his trademark black lenses and tireless work ethic. He was capable of spending six hours in the water to capture the perfect wave, immersing himself fully in the surfing environment. His close relationship with Kelly Slater extended beyond the camera, as the two shared numerous trips and life experiences together.

On May 19, Slater paid tribute to his late friend on Instagram, expressing the deep impact of Jarvenin’s passing. “Hit me hard last week to learn of the passing of my longtime and dear friend, Timo Jarvenin,” Slater wrote. Reflecting on their bond, he said, “We spent many trips together.” He also acknowledged Jarvenin’s personal growth in recent years, describing his friend’s efforts to become “a better man for the woman he fell in love with” despite a life spent traveling on his own terms.

Slater shared a memorable anecdote that captured Jarvenin’s character perfectly. When asked what fruit he would be if he could choose, Jarvenin replied, “I’d be a coconut… cause I am hard on the outside and soft on the inside.” Slater called this “the perfect description.”

Tributes have poured in from across the surfing community, with prominent surfers like Mick Fanning, Leonardo Fioravanti, and Sean Doherty joining Slater in honoring Jarvenin’s legacy. His ability to capture high-intensity moments in notoriously challenging surf spots such as Teahupo’o and La Gravière showcased his extraordinary skill at finding clarity amidst chaos.

Timo Jarvenin’s photographic lineage traced back through his father and grandfather, both skilled photographers who nurtured his early passion. Though initially hesitant to embrace digital photography, Jarvenin eventually adapted, blending traditional techniques with modern technology to refine his distinctive style. He preferred dynamic, action-packed shots over the more static, cinematic images commonly seen on social media.

One of his most celebrated moments came in 2007 at Teahupo’o, when Jarvenin remained in neck-deep water well after sunset, long after the other surfers and boats had left, in pursuit of capturing a rare perfect wave. This unwavering commitment exemplifies the dedication that earned him respect within the global surfing community.

As the surfing world reflects on Jarvenin’s contributions, his legacy endures in the powerful images that continue to inspire new generations of photographers and surfers alike.
