Queensland Junior Surfing Champions Crowned at Sunshine Beach

by Allen

The second and final event of the Queensland Junior Surfing Titles concluded today at Sunshine Beach, where ideal winter conditions and clean two-foot surf provided a fitting stage for the announcement of this year’s Queensland Champions.

Competitors across the Under 16 and Under 18 divisions vied not only for event victories but also for state titles and selection into the 2025 Australian Junior Surfing Titles, to be held on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula from November 28 to December 5.

The day opened with the Under 18 Boys final, where a rise in swell added intensity to the already high-stakes competition. Mitchell Peterson delivered a dominant performance, securing the win with a near-perfect 9.00 ride. Despite finishing second on the day, Darcy Dwyer was awarded the overall Queensland Championship title, thanks to his consistent podium finishes across both events in the series.

In the Under 18 Girls division, Brisa Canina claimed both the event victory and the overall Queensland title. Canina edged out strong challenges from Meika Locke, Stella Green, and Laney Stokes, sealing her win with two critical final rides that elevated her above the field.

The Under 16 Boys final saw Luca Martin prevail in a closely contested heat. Martin not only claimed the top podium spot but also the overall state title, defeating Harrison Gibbs, Cooper Rielly, and Zac Johnston, who finished second through fourth respectively.

The Under 16 Girls division featured a family showdown between twin sisters Eliza and Rosie Richardson. Rosie captured the final win for a second consecutive year, but it was Eliza who earned the overall Queensland title based on her cumulative performance across both events, marking her second straight state title.

The Queensland Champions were determined by the combined results of Event 1 and Event 2 in the series.

Looking ahead, the Queensland Grommet Titles will resume next weekend on the Gold Coast, from June 21–22, where competitors in the Under 12 and Under 14 divisions will take center stage in the final event of the season.

Surfing Queensland extended its gratitude to its corporate partners for their continued support, including Suzuki Queensland, DriTimes, We Are Feel Good Inc, QMS, the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Council, The Point Coolum, Mogu Mogu, and Cooee.
