Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts are being warned to exercise caution following a confirmed cougar sighting near a popular trail in Chilliwack.
WildSafeBC’s Fraser Valley chapter issued a public advisory Thursday afternoon, reporting that the City of Chilliwack had requested assistance in notifying the public about a cougar seen on Little Mountain, near the water tower. The area, located just off Yale Road, features a well-travelled stairway trail frequented by hikers and runners.
In its social media post, WildSafeBC emphasized the importance of preparedness and vigilance while in cougar territory.
“Keep your backpack on. If you see a cougar, keep your eye on it and be prepared to throw rocks,” the advisory stated. “Make yourself look big and loud—call out, ‘Hey cougar!’ Keep pets leashed and small children close. Bear spray is effective against cougars—please learn how to use it.”
WildSafeBC also provided safety guidelines in the event of an encounter:
Avoid potential encounters by staying alert and carrying bear spray.
If a cougar is sighted, stop and remain calm. Do not turn your back or run.
Maintain eye contact, appear large, make noise, and back away slowly.
If attacked, fight back aggressively, stay with your group, and use bear spray if available.
WildSafeBC continues to work with local municipalities to promote public awareness and minimize conflict between humans and wildlife.
