Ocean Heroes Teach Surfing to Kids with Autism

by Allen

A dedicated team of instructors and volunteers from Ocean Heroes is breaking down barriers for children with autism by teaching them how to surf at beaches across the country. The national program’s next free event will take place at Flat Rock Beach on Saturday, June 21, marking its first visit to Ballina.

Since its inception, Ocean Heroes has supported more than 9,000 families, with previous successful events held at Byron Bay and Lennox Head. These sessions have drawn both local and visiting volunteers who contribute to the program’s growing impact.

Event organizer Lachlan McArthur, who began as a volunteer lifeguard, now plays a leading role in running the initiative. “My older brother has autism, and the ocean has always been a special place for us to connect and be ourselves,” McArthur said.

He emphasized the vital role of volunteers in the program’s success. “We rely heavily on them — without their support, we couldn’t achieve the impact we strive for. A core group regularly attends our regional events to help train new volunteers,” he explained.

Ocean Heroes provides all necessary equipment, including surfboards, wetsuits, and life jackets. Each child is paired with an experienced surfer who builds their confidence before heading into the water.

“The most rewarding part is seeing how the local community rallies around the event,” McArthur noted. “While we supply equipment and training, volunteers handle much of the hands-on work. There’s also strong interest from community members, local businesses, schools, and care providers wanting to get involved.”

McArthur highlighted that many children with autism face safety and other challenges that often prevent them from visiting the beach. “When we ask families to fill out a registration form, many respond that their child only visits the beach once a year—or never,” he said.

He described Ocean Heroes as a crucial bridge for these families. “We’re often the first step in helping kids with autism connect with the ocean, making the beach a more accessible and regular part of their lives.”
