Wilson Stuns Ferreira in Surfing Comeback

Australian surfer Julian Wilson has pulled off a remarkable upset at the World Surf League event on the Gold Coast, eliminating world No. 1 Italo Ferreira and advancing to the quarter-finals in a stunning return to top-level competition.

Wilson, 36, who stepped away from professional surfing in 2021 citing mental health concerns, returned to the tour with a wildcard earned through the qualifying event at Burleigh Heads. His comeback has quickly turned into a headline story after a commanding performance in the round of 32 saw him defeat Ferreira, despite nearly missing the start of his heat.

“I thought I had another 30 minutes before I was due to surf,” Wilson said. “It definitely got the heart rate up, but it worked in my favour. I didn’t have time to overthink or build expectations about the conditions. I just reacted, and I think that helped.”

The Queenslander, a former world No. 2, followed up his first-round heroics with another impressive display, scoring a 9.5 after expertly riding a barrel to dispatch France’s Marco Mignot in the round of 16.

“This is beyond my dreams at the moment,” Wilson said following his second win of the day. “I came into the trials with just a small hope of making it through. Now, to be in the quarter-finals—I never expected this. I feel like I’m growing with the event and surprising myself.”

The win over Ferreira marked Wilson’s fifth career victory over the Brazilian superstar, solidifying his status as a formidable competitor even after years away from the sport.

Wilson’s performance comes just a day after fellow Australian and eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore eliminated reigning women’s world champion Caity Simmers in her return to competition after an 18-month absence.

The men’s draw continues to feature strong Australian representation, with Morgan Cibilic also advancing to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the women’s quarter-final matchups—featuring Gilmore and four other Australians—have been delayed due to scheduling and conditions.
