The sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing (NMPA IOS) is set to commence at Tannirbhavi Eco Beach from May 30 to June 1. Organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by the Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), this event marks the second leg of the 2025 National Surfing Championship series.
This year’s competition is poised to be particularly challenging, as surf forecasts predict wave heights reaching 10 to 12 feet during the event dates. These powerful swells will test the surfers’ skill, stamina, and strategic prowess, adding a heightened level of excitement and difficulty to the contest.
Cyclonic activity and volatile weather patterns over the Arabian Sea may further complicate conditions, potentially impacting the event’s proceedings. The demanding surf environment is also likely to influence national rankings, especially with the Asian Surf Championship 2025 — a qualifying event for the 2026 Asian Games — approaching.
Originally scheduled to take place at Sasihithlu Beach, the competition has been relocated to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach due to adverse weather conditions. The new venue offers comparable wave quality while prioritising the safety of both surfers and spectators.
“With a strong field of athletes and challenging 10–12 ft waves forecasted, we anticipate an intense and thrilling three days of competition,” said Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President of the Surfing Federation of India and Director of Mantra Surf Club. He acknowledged the crucial support from New Mangalore Port Authority, Karnataka Tourism, and Cycle Pure Agarbathis, whose contributions have been vital to the growth of surfing in India.
In the lead-up to this sixth edition, several local competitions have aimed to discover and nurture regional surfing talent, building momentum towards the national championship and fostering a sustainable talent pipeline.
