2025 Big Wave Challenge Returns with Bigger Prizes and Live Event

by Allen

The Big Wave Challenge is set to make waves once again in 2025, returning with an exciting array of awards, cash prizes, and a live show to celebrate the world’s best big-wave surfers. This year’s event, led by Bill Sharp, promises an unforgettable experience, culminating in a live award ceremony at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach, California, on September 13.

The Big Wave Challenge has become a marquee event for surfers who brave some of the most dangerous and awe-inspiring waves on the planet. At the heart of this challenge are athletes like Nathan Florence, Laura Enever, Trevor Carlson, and Katie McConnell, who were recognized for their achievements in Nazaré, Portugal, last October. These surfers, known for their fearless approach to massive swells, will once again be honored at the 2025 edition, which is expected to offer over $100,000 in prize money, with additional sponsorships still being secured.

Nathan Florence, a two-time Surfer of the Year recipient, shared his excitement about the return of the event, emphasizing the dedication and challenges that come with big-wave surfing. “It’s one of the most incredible aspects of the sport because we are pushing ourselves against the most powerful force of nature,” Florence said. “The mental and physical strain of it all is something that’s celebrated here, and it’s important for the next generation to have this platform.”

Honoring the Late Ben Carlson

In a special partnership, the Big Wave Challenge will honor the memory of Newport Beach lifeguard Ben Carlson, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. The event will feature the “Ben Did Go 10.0” paddleboard race, a tribute to Carlson’s heroism. The race, which will take place the morning of the awards show, will feature paddlers from Catalina Island to Newport Beach. Participants in the race will also receive VIP balcony seats for the evening’s award ceremony.

New Features and Expanded Celebrations

In addition to the live show, this year’s event will introduce the “Big Wave Honors,” a new segment to celebrate unique moments from the season that didn’t fit into the main categories. This could include standout rides on unconventional equipment, hilarious jet ski mishaps, and exceptional photographs. The goal is to capture the lighter, more surprising moments of big-wave surfing, offering a well-rounded celebration of the sport.

The 2024-2025 winter season provided no shortage of unforgettable performances. From Alo Slebir’s potential record-setting wave at Mavericks to Justine Dupont’s daring runs at Nazaré and Jaws, the year’s entries have been nothing short of spectacular. The event’s nominees reflect the incredible skill and courage exhibited in some of the most challenging surf spots in the world.

Celebrating the Photographers Behind the Lens

A special dinner, the Big Shots Dinner, will be held on September 12 to honor the world’s best surf photographers and videographers, recognizing their critical role in capturing the beauty and danger of big-wave surfing. The event will culminate in a private after-party on September 13 in Newport Beach, promising cocktails, a red carpet, and all the excitement of a SoCal big-wave gala, as described by Bill Sharp.

While the event will initially be exclusive to nominees and active participants, additional tickets may become available to the public in July. All proceeds from public ticket sales will benefit the Ben Carlson Foundation.

The Countdown Begins

With so much excitement building for the 2025 Big Wave Challenge, fans of big-wave surfing can look forward to a spectacular celebration of the sport’s top athletes. The event will not only highlight the skill and bravery of surfers like Albee Layer and Wilem Banks but also pay tribute to the culture, camaraderie, and community that make big-wave surfing truly unique.

As the official media partner, SURFER magazine will provide in-depth coverage of the nominees leading up to the event, profiling the faces and stories behind some of the most jaw-dropping waves of the year.
