Liz Cantor Joins Surfing Queensland Board

Surfing Queensland has announced the appointment of television presenter and former professional surfer Liz Cantor to its Board of Directors, adding a high-profile advocate for the sport with deep industry experience and media expertise.

Cantor, a well-known face on Australian television and a lifelong surfer, brings more than two decades of media experience alongside a rich history in competitive surfing. Her appointment is expected to strengthen the organisation’s strategic direction, with a particular focus on enhancing community engagement and elevating the profile of surfing across Queensland.

“Liz’s connection to the surf community, her history of championing women in sport, and her communication skills will help guide our growth and impact in the years ahead,” said Julian Blanchard, Chairperson of Surfing Queensland. “We’re thrilled to welcome her to the board.”

A former Billabong-sponsored athlete, Cantor has surfed internationally at top-tier breaks in Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, and Europe. She made history as the first female judge on the World Surf League (then ASP Tour), paving the way for more women in competitive officiating roles.

While studying for a Bachelor of Communication in Journalism, Cantor managed Billabong’s Girls Surf Team, mentoring surf icons such as Layne Beachley and recruiting future stars Sally Fitzgibbons and Laura Enever.

Today, she presents the weather for 10 News First Queensland on weekdays and features regularly on Channel 7 lifestyle programs Creek to Coast and Weekender, where her storytelling reflects the same passion and energy she brought to her surfing career.

Cantor joins an existing board that includes Julian Blanchard, Jeff Frazer, Paul Peterson, Erin Tanner, and Roxanne Millar.

“I’m incredibly proud to join the board of Surfing Queensland and continue contributing to a sport that has shaped so much of my life,” Cantor said. “The future of surfing is inclusive, and I’m excited to help make that a reality.”

She has expressed a strong commitment to fostering Queensland as a global hub for emerging surf talent and is especially passionate about increasing female participation, including more women in officiating, judging, and coaching roles.
