WA Longboard Champions Crowned at 2025 Event

by Allen

The 2025 West Coast Suspensions WA Longboard Championships, presented by Think Mental Health, concluded this past weekend with an exciting showcase of surfing talent, style, and community spirit along Western Australia’s picturesque south coast.

Parry’s Beach provided a dynamic arena for competition, with conditions ranging from idyllic waves on Saturday to challenging swells on finals day. The event crowned thirteen State Champions across junior, open, and senior divisions, highlighting the depth of longboarding talent from Exmouth to Esperance.

In the Open Men’s division, Dunsborough’s Jack Medland made a victorious return to competition. Demonstrating a seamless blend of traditional and progressive maneuvers, Medland secured the State Title with a near-perfect 9.17 wave score and a strong backup 6.33, totaling 15.50 out of 20.

“Saturday offered amazing waves — Parry’s at its best. Finals day was more intense, so full credit to everyone who gave it their all,” said Medland. “A big thanks to Surfing WA, the judges, Dobbo on the ski, and everyone who came out. It’s all about community, and it’s inspiring to see the same faces year after year.”

The Open Men’s final was highly competitive, with Evan Ledger (Yallingup), Ryan Clark (Dunsborough), and Scott Trew (Gabbadah) pushing Medland to the limit. Ledger finished second, Clark third, and Trew fourth.

Defending Open Women’s champion Maddie Barrett from Cottesloe clinched her second consecutive State Title. Originally from Geraldton, Barrett impressed with her composure and skill in the challenging swell, edging out Denver Young (Claremont), Georgia Young (Perth), and Shae Sheridan (Dunsborough).

“Saturday was really fun, though finals day tested me. Honestly, the best part of this event is the community — I enjoyed time on the beach as much as in the water,” Barrett shared with a smile.

In the Over-40 Men’s division, Paul Burke (Dunsborough) delivered a thrilling performance, securing victory with a last-minute wave that edged out long-time rival Scott Trew. Burke also triumphed in the Over-50 Men’s category, becoming the only competitor to claim two State Titles this year in Denmark.

“I was struggling early on, thinking these guys had me beat, but I caught the winning wave with five minutes left,” Burke said. “Competing against Scotty over the years always pushes me, so I’m stoked with the double win.”

Other notable champions included Shae Sheridan (Dunsborough) in the Over-40 Women’s division, Amanda Curley (Margaret River) in the Over-50 Women’s, and Judy Dann (Two Rocks) in the Over-60 Women’s category.

In senior men’s divisions, Keith Lingard (Denmark) won Over-55 Men’s, Doug Carruthers (Margaret River) claimed Over-60 Men’s, Bill Gibson (Margaret River) dominated Over-65 Men’s, and John Haddow (Cowaramup) took the Over-70 Men’s title.

The Under-18 Boys division highlighted the sport’s promising future, with brothers Kai and Taylor Flynn (Cowaramup) and Max and Qynn Horwood (Hillarys) competing fiercely. Kai Flynn earned the State Title ahead of Max Horwood, Taylor Flynn, and Qynn Horwood.

“Congratulations to all our champions and National Title qualifiers,” said Kim Clift, Regional Operations Manager at Surfing WA. “This weekend was a fantastic demonstration of WA’s longboarding talent and community spirit.”

Following the Denmark event, attention turns to the 26th Whalebone Longboard Classic in Cottesloe this July, offering competitors a final tune-up before the Australian Titles later this year.
