Koa Rothman, renowned for his daring exploits in the world of big-wave surfing, made a high-stakes decision in late April that would land him at one of the most notorious breaks on the West Coast: the Wedge. The legendary wave, known for its intense power and massive barrels, provided Rothman with the perfect setting to showcase his skills.
On April 23, Rothman left his home in Oahu and traveled to New York for a photoshoot and promotional event with his new sponsor, Darc Sport. Following the East Coast engagements, the 29-year-old surfer had a choice to make: a trip to South America or California, depending on which forecast offered the most promising surf. After assessing the conditions, Rothman made the call to head to Southern California.
Arriving in California on April 26, Rothman immediately headed to Newport Beach, where the Wedge was living up to its reputation. After grabbing a bite at the iconic In-N-Out Burger and resting off the effects of travel, Rothman wasted no time and hit the waves.
“The Wedge is kind of pumping,” Rothman shared ahead of his surf session. “It looks really fun today—six to eight feet, with tomorrow being even bigger.” His prediction would prove accurate, as conditions on the following day far exceeded expectations.
