Champions Crowned as WA’s Best Young Surfers Shine at Trigg Beach

Western Australia’s top junior surfers showcased their skills over three exceptional days at Trigg Beach, where near-perfect winter conditions provided an ideal stage for the second round of the 2025 WA Junior Surfing Titles, presented by Think Mental Health.

A field of 100 competitors from across the state battled in eight divisions, with four new state champions emerging and critical ranking points earned ahead of the series finale in Geraldton this July.

“The conditions really turned it on for us this weekend,” said Justin Majeks, Surfing WA Events Manager. “From dawn till dusk, the quality of surfing, the atmosphere on the beach, and the community support made it a standout winter weekend for WA surfing.”

Among the standout performers were Olive Hardy (Margaret River), Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), Poppy Redman Carr (Dunsborough), Ethan Anderson (Cowaramup), Ily Fraser (Margaret River), Ollie Holmes (Dunsborough), Luna Thomas (Margaret River), and Kyuss Rimmer (Trigg), each capturing titles in their respective divisions.

Reigning Under-16 Girls national champion Olive Hardy claimed the Under-18 Girls state title with a commanding 13.50 point total out of 20. Hardy, renowned for her power and precision, praised the strong competition. “I’m over the moon to win the state title here at Trigg,” she said. “The other girls pushed me right to the end.”

In the Under-18 Boys division, Maverick Wilson dominated with a near-flawless performance, scoring 15.94 points. “The waves have been really fun, and I found some great corners to lay it down,” Wilson said. “This is my final junior year, and I’m already excited for Geraldton where I hope to claim the state title.”

Poppy Redman Carr earned her first state title in the Under-16 Girls division, following in the footsteps of her mother, former World No. 2 Melanie Redman Carr. “This is my first state title win after several close finishes,” Poppy said. “It’s been a fantastic event, and all the girls surfed amazingly.”

The Under-16 Boys title went to Ethan Anderson, who narrowly edged out Geraldton’s Cruz Macdonald by just 0.10 points in a thrilling final. “I’m really happy; the boys pushed me hard,” Anderson said. “I learned a lot last year and can’t wait for nationals.”

Ily Fraser secured her second consecutive Trigg victory in the Under-14 Girls division with a 13.67 total, demonstrating consistency and strength. “I’m proud to defend my state championship and hope to improve on my second place at nationals last year,” Fraser said.

Other winners included Ollie Holmes (Under-14 Boys), Luna Thomas (Under-12 Girls), and local favorite Kyuss Rimmer (Under-12 Boys), all of whom impressed with their skill and composure.

The final leg of the 2025 WA Junior Surfing Titles will take place in Geraldton from 18-20 July, where remaining champions will be decided and WA’s elite junior team selected for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in South Australia this November.

“Congratulations to all our winners and a big thank you to the surfers, families, judges, and supporters who made this event so special,” Majeks said. “We look forward to an exciting conclusion to the series in Geraldton.”
