Hikers will gather on Monday, June 23, to ascend to the Tom LaBonge Panorama in Griffith Park, paying tribute to the late Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, a devoted park supporter and avid hiker.
The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Charlie Turner Trailhead, located at 2840 W. Observatory Road, before proceeding to the Mt. Hollywood viewpoint named in LaBonge’s honor. LaBonge’s wife, Brigid, along with family members, will join the event. A brief ceremony will be held at sunset to commemorate LaBonge’s enduring legacy.
Tom LaBonge, who passed away on January 7, 2021, represented the City Council’s 4th District from 2001 to 2015. Known for his deep connection to Griffith Park, LaBonge made a habit of hiking to the summit of Mt. Hollywood daily for 45 years, often before dawn. He also organized annual solstice hikes in the park to celebrate the changing seasons.
His son, Charles LaBonge, emphasized the significance of this year’s event, stating, “For years, it was about taking a hike, being outdoors, and celebrating the start of summer, which was a lot of fun. But this year, we want everyone to come together in a show of strength and resilience and to rejoice in that. There will be a lot of family and friends and everyone in between.”
Participants are encouraged to hike at their own pace. Sunset is expected at 8:07 p.m. on June 23. The ceremony at the panorama will feature music and refreshments.
Parking near the trailhead is limited. Attendees are advised to use ride-hailing services or park at the Greek Theatre and take the DASH bus to the Griffith Observatory.
