Newcastle City Council is considering a proposal to provide up to $250,000 annually to support Surfest’s inclusion in the World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series through to 2028, aiming to secure the event’s international status.
The iconic surfing competition, scheduled to return to Merewether Beach in less than two weeks, is expected to attract both global attention and local spectators.
At Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting, councillors will vote on whether to commit to a three-year investment package comprising financial and in-kind support for Surfest.
This funding proposal is contingent on Destination NSW increasing its contribution to help cement Surfest’s position on the WSL’s second-tier Challenger Series tour, which serves as a key platform for emerging world champion surfers.
Elevating Surfest to the Challenger Series represents a significant milestone in its 40-year history and places Newcastle among the top 16 surfing destinations worldwide.
The 2025 event is projected to reach an audience of 3.2 million live viewers and generate over 50 million social media impressions, enhancing Newcastle’s reputation as a premier surf and tourism destination.
The funding aligns with the City of Newcastle’s Strategic Event Partnership Program, which has allocated up to $2 million annually to attract and retain major events in the region.
“City of Newcastle is proud to be one of the foundation sponsors of Surfest, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026,” said Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz, Chair of the City’s Sports Infrastructure Working Party.
“Surfest offers young local athletes the chance to witness their surfing heroes compete on home turf, inspiring the next generation whether they aspire to follow in their footsteps or simply enjoy the event at their local beach.”
Since its inception in 1985, Surfest has played a pivotal role in transforming Newcastle from an industrial city to a vibrant coastal destination.
The 2025 World Surf League Challenger Series will take place from June 2 to June 8 at Merewether Beach. For the full schedule and event details, visit www.surfest.com.
