Surfing Banned Again This Summer at Rockaway Beach

A portion of Rockaway Beach at Jacob Riis Park will remain closed to surfers and beachgoers throughout the summer, following ongoing safety concerns identified by the National Park Service. The popular beachbreak, managed by the National Park Service, was first closed in 2024 due to hazardous conditions stemming from increased coastal erosion.

The erosion has exposed numerous dangers, including deteriorated wooden groins, rock work, and submerged structures dating back to the early 20th century. Among these are wooden pylons, locally known as “sticks,” which are believed to have contributed to the drowning of a surfer in April when he became entangled underwater.

Walter Rodríguez Meyer, a local surfer, described the remnants as “razor sharp,” warning that the exposed wooden beams include rusted metal rods and bolts, posing significant risks to those in the water.

In 2023, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers launched a $12 million sand replenishment initiative, depositing approximately 360,000 cubic yards of sand to widen the shoreline and cover hazardous obstacles. Although the project was anticipated to require replenishment every four to six years, a majority of the added sand was rapidly washed away within months.

Additionally, a $2.7 million renovation of the beach’s concrete pathway has faced delays. Intended for completion in December 2024, the project remains unfinished, with sand covering large portions of the boardwalk and exposed bench foundations along the walkway.

Army Corps spokesperson Hector Mosley confirmed there are no plans for further construction or sand replenishment at Jacob Riis Park this summer. Meanwhile, a National Park Service representative indicated that the walkway renovation is approaching completion.

Officials plan to conduct another survey of the area later this year to assess conditions and determine future stabilization efforts.
