Western Australia’s vibrant surfing community has been making waves across the state and beyond, with a string of recent competitions, victories, and initiatives underscoring the region’s deep-rooted surf culture.
From junior showcases in Mandurah to elite-level triumphs on the national stage, Surfing WA has been at the forefront of action in recent weeks. Among the highlights was the launch of the 2025 West Coast Suspensions WA Longboard Championships, set to begin this Friday in Denmark, WA. The event, presented by Think Mental Health, will see the state’s best longboarders head south for what is considered one of the most anticipated surf events of the year.
Meanwhile, Western Australia’s own Jacob Willcox delivered a standout performance at the 2025 Burton Automotive Newcastle Surfest, claiming victory in the prestigious national competition. Held at Merewether Beach in New South Wales, the event marked the first stop of the World Surf League (WSL) tour and showcased Willcox’s skill on the world stage.
“It’s a great result for Jacob and for WA surfing,” said a spokesperson from Surfing WA. “He’s a testament to the strength of the talent pipeline we’re seeing emerge from our beaches.”
Closer to home, Trigg Beach recently hosted an impressive display of emerging talent as the next generation of WA surfers competed in ideal winter conditions. Over three days of clean offshore winds and consistent swell, junior athletes competed in a range of divisions, highlighting the bright future of the sport in the region.
In addition to competition, Surfing WA has continued to invest in community programs. The popular women’s initiative #BeyondWaves returned for its second season, offering monthly events designed to build confidence and connection among female surfers across the state.
“Our focus is not just on competition, but on creating inclusive opportunities for everyone to enjoy the ocean,” said Surfing WA representatives. “Programs like #BeyondWaves are about empowerment and making surfing accessible.”
Surfing WA has also announced two new job openings for an Events Manager and an Office Administrator, offering passionate individuals a chance to join the team at its Trigg-based headquarters.
As the 2025 season continues to unfold, Surfing WA remains committed to supporting athletes at all levels, from grassroots to global.
