James Piot Returns to PGA Tour for First Time Since Leaving LIV Golf

by Allen

As the Rocket Mortgage Classic approaches at Detroit Golf Club, players are announcing their participation and arriving for the event. Among the notable names are recent Travelers Championship winner Keegan Bradley and rookie Luke Clanton, making another appearance since turning professional. However, one player in particular stands out: Detroit native James Piot, making his first PGA Tour appearance since departing from LIV Golf.

A Promising Amateur Career

James Piot made his mark early as an amateur golfer, winning the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship at Oakmont Country Club. After turning professional in 2022, Piot competed in several PGA Tour events, including two major championships—the Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open. However, his career took a turn when he joined LIV Golf during its inaugural season.

Time with LIV Golf

Piot’s decision to join LIV Golf in its first year came with significant consequences. Due to PGA Tour rules, his participation in LIV Golf led to a suspension from officially sanctioned PGA Tour events. Despite this setback, Piot remained active on the LIV circuit, playing as a member of the HyFlyers team led by Phil Mickelson. When his contract with LIV Golf expired, it was not renewed, leaving him at a crossroads in his professional career.

Career After LIV

Following his departure from LIV Golf, Piot was ineligible to compete on the PGA Tour for one year. During this period, he sought opportunities in alternative tours and competitions to stay competitive. He secured a victory on a mini-tour in Florida, competed in the Korn Ferry Tour, and also participated on the Asian Tour to accumulate valuable ranking points. Reflecting on his experience, Piot expressed no regrets, viewing his time with LIV Golf as a crucial learning phase and an important step in launching his professional career. He also praised Phil Mickelson as a legendary mentor.

Return to the PGA Tour

Piot’s return to the PGA Tour was secured through a sponsor exemption to the Rocket Mortgage Classic, marking his first appearance on the PGA Tour in three years. “For it to actually happen is the coolest thing in the world,” Piot told the Detroit News. “It’s awesome. Just the fact I finally get to play in the Rocket Classic—it’s a dream come true. Ever since the event was created on the schedule, I wanted to be a part of it.”

Piot becomes only the second former LIV Golf player to rejoin the PGA Tour, following Laurie Canter’s return earlier this year. His participation at the Rocket Mortgage Classic signals a new chapter in his career, with the potential to earn a PGA Tour card in the near future.

Fans and followers will be eager to see how Piot performs as he competes back on one of golf’s biggest stages.
