Johnson Rises, Ferreira Falls in New WSL Rankings

by Allen

Following the conclusion of the Trestles Pro in California, the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour rankings have seen a significant shake-up, with standout performances and surprising upsets altering the leaderboard.

South Africa’s Jordy Smith and Hawaii’s Gabriela Bryan remain atop the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, maintaining their grip on the No. 1 spots midway through the season.

The WSL’s ranking system awards points to surfers based on their placement at each event. According to WSL rules, first place in a Championship Tour (CT) event earns 10,000 points, second place garners 7,800, and subsequent placements receive progressively fewer points. Cumulative totals determine a surfer’s overall ranking.

Johnson Climbs to No. 4 After Breakout Performance

Among the biggest movers in the latest update is Hawaiian surfer Bettylou Sakura Johnson, who jumped three spots to No. 4 following a standout showing at the Trestles Pro. Johnson posted the highest women’s heat total of the season—17.83—in the quarterfinals, then proceeded to defeat Sawyer Lindblad in the semifinals and Molly Picklum in the final to claim the event title.

Despite Johnson’s win, she remains just behind Picklum in the rankings. Picklum holds the No. 3 position with 43,345 points, while Johnson, bolstered by her 10,000-point victory at Trestles, now sits at 37,320.

Ferreira Slides, Dora Surges in Men’s Division

The men’s division saw a shift as well, with Brazil’s Italo Ferreira dropping two spots to No. 4 after a lackluster performance at Trestles. Meanwhile, fellow Brazilian Yago Dora surged to No. 2 following his victory at the event, earning a full 10,000 points after defeating Kanoa Igarashi in the finals. Igarashi now holds the No. 3 position.

The leaderboard remains fluid, with the next CT event—the VIVO Rio Pro—scheduled for June 21–29 in Brazil. With high stakes and shifting momentum, rankings could change significantly depending on the outcome.
