What began as a short mountain hike turned into a prolonged search and rescue effort for two adults and their dog in Nelson County.
Adam and Jamie, accompanied by Jamie’s parents’ dog Savannah, set out for a quick hike, but failed to return by their planned 8 p.m. deadline. Concerned, Jamie’s parents contacted the National Park Service around 10 p.m., who advised calling 911.
Wintergreen Fire & Rescue launched an overnight search from 10:04 p.m. to 2 a.m. without success and resumed at dawn. Officials learned that Adam and Jamie became lost, and Savannah injured her paw pads on sharp rocks, rendering her unable to walk. The pair carried the dog for six miles before taking shelter overnight under a large tree.
At sunrise, unable to continue carrying Savannah, Jamie went to seek help. He encountered Wintergreen’s rescue team and guided them back to Adam and the dog.
Due to low cloud ceilings, helicopter evacuation was impossible despite requests to the Virginia State Police and Virginia National Guard. Ultimately, Adam and Jamie walked out with rescuers, while Savannah was transported in a rescue basket.
Wintergreen Fire & Rescue reported the ordeal lasted about 16 hours. All are now safe, with Savannah receiving special care and attention.
