The Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles, presented by Rip Curl, will once again be held at the iconic Djarrak / Bells Beach from May 30 to June 1, 2025. Now in its 12th year, the event brings together some of the nation’s best Indigenous surfing talent, representing regions across Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia.
Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the competition on Wadawurrung Country. “It will be great to welcome First Nations surfers from across the country to one of the most anticipated events on the Victorian surfing calendar — and what better place to have it than right here at Bells Beach/Djarrak,” he said.
The event features multiple divisions, including Open Men and Women, Junior Men and Women (Under 18), Masters (Over 35) Men and Women, Over 50s expression session, and Open Men and Women Longboard categories.
Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Mike Bodsworth, highlighted the cultural significance of Bells Beach to the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners. “Bells holds deep significance for Wadawurrung people. This event offers a wonderful opportunity for top First Nations surfers and visitors from across Australia to connect with Country at one of the world’s most iconic surf breaks,” Bodsworth said.
Multiple-time Indigenous Open Champion Russ Molony from Central Coast, NSW, shared his excitement for the event. “This is my favourite time of year — connecting with our Mobs, celebrating culture, and surfing Bells. It doesn’t get any better than that!”
In a significant incentive, the Open Men’s and Women’s champions will earn a wildcard entry into the Australian Surf Championships later this year.
Adam Robertson, CEO of Surfing Victoria, praised the event’s growth and prestige. “We’re proud to once again host the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles presented by Rip Curl at Djarrak. Now in its 12th year, this competition has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events on both the Victorian and national surfing calendars,” Robertson said. “I look forward to witnessing some of the best Indigenous surfing talent from across the country take on the challenging waves at Djarrak and wish all competitors the best of luck.”
The event will open with a Welcome to Country ceremony by Wadawurrung Traditional Owners at 7:30 a.m. on May 30, and members of the public are invited to attend.
