Perth-born model Gemma Ward has disclosed that she suffered a serious spinal injury in a recent surfing accident, explaining her prolonged absence from social media.
The 37-year-old took to Instagram on Monday to inform her 222,000 followers that she fractured three vertebrae during the incident. Despite the injury, Ward continued to work, including traveling to Paris for a photoshoot with Lancôme, which she described as “a complete honour.”
“A lot has happened since I last posted,” Ward wrote. “I fractured 3 vertebrae in my spine from a surfing accident, flew to Paris to shoot for Lancôme again which was a complete honour, but in the wake of my accident I forgot to renew my passport so I had to get an emergency one and nearly missed the whole shoot.”
Following the accident, Ward has focused on recovery and rehabilitation. She also completed a writing course and spent time reflecting on her life and the wider world. In addition to her rehabilitation efforts, Ward is working on a novel and raising her three young children.
“Hope you are all doing well and getting some rest here and there,” she added.
The post attracted messages of support from notable friends and colleagues. Australian model Nicole Trunfio commented, “So many emotions. Get better soon. Miss you and the babes and a NOVEL?? I cannot wait to read!”
Sports Illustrated alum Jessica Gomes added, “Always back in full form! You are the best!! Love you big!!!” Victoria’s Secret model Martha Hunt also expressed support with heart and plaster emojis.
Ward was recently seen enjoying a beach day in Sydney with her children, where she was photographed barefoot and makeup-free, managing towels and carrying her kids’ belongings.
Since her debut at Australian Fashion Week at age 15, Ward has built a distinguished career, appearing on Vogue covers and walking for luxury brands including Prada, Chanel, and Dior.
