WA Longboard Championships Launch in Denmark

by Allen

The much-anticipated 2025 West Coast Suspensions WA Longboard Championships, proudly presented by Think Mental Health, will commence this Friday in Denmark, promising three days of competitive surfing amidst some of Western Australia’s most scenic coastal breaks.

A flagship event on the Surfing WA calendar, the Championships attract a diverse field of competitors spanning 13 divisions, from Under-18 Juniors to Over-70 Grand Legends. This year’s event not only crowns state champions but also offers surfers a pathway to the prestigious Australian Longboard Titles, scheduled later this year in Tweed, New South Wales.

Surfers will converge from across the state, ranging from the northern reaches of Exmouth to the southern shores of Esperance, all vying for state titles and spots on the Western Australian team. The competition will showcase a blend of seasoned champions and emerging talent, setting the stage for both classic rivalries and new matchups.

Among the favorites returning is 2023 Open Men’s champion Jack Medland of Dunsborough, who faces stiff competition from former State Champion Ryan Clark (Dunsborough), alongside Scott Trew (Gabbadah) and Evan Ledger (Yallingup), all contenders for the 2025 title.

The Open Women’s division is expected to draw significant attention, with Maddie Barrett of Cottesloe aiming to secure back-to-back titles. Barrett’s main challengers include Georgia Young (Perth), Shae Sheridan (Dunsborough), Denver Young (Claremont), and Bridget Churack (Yallingup), each bringing strong credentials to the lineup.

Adding to the event’s competitive depth is Paul Burke (Dunsborough), the reigning Over-45 Men’s Australian champion, who seeks to defend his state crown with a standout performance.

Forecasts predict a range of surfing conditions at Parry’s Beach over the three-day event, with organizers poised to maximize favorable waves and conclude finals during the weekend.

As one of the longer journeys on the Surfing WA circuit, competitors and supporters are reminded by Surfing WA to prioritize road safety, urging drivers to avoid mobile phone distractions. The campaign, #NoTxtNoWrecks, underscores the importance of safe travel.

Fans can follow the Championships live via liveheats.com, with real-time scoring updates throughout the competition. Additional event coverage, including photos and highlights, will be available on Surfing WA’s official social media channels and website at www.surfingwa.com.au.
